This year is the 50th anniversary of the publication of Silent Spring by Rachel Carson.

In an immensely influential book she brought to public attention the disastrous effects of pesticides on the environment and is credited with kick starting worldwide grassroots environmental movements.

Silent Spring has often been listed as one of the most important non fiction books of the 20th century.

Her influence continues to the present day. A follow up ‘Beyond Silent Spring’ was written in 1996 by H.F. van Emden and David Peakall. In 2007 a biography ‘The Gentle Subversive Rachel Carson, Silent Spring, and the Rise of the Environmental Movement’ by Mark Hamilton Lytle was published.

This year a symphonic tone poem by Pulitzer Prize winning American composer Steven Stucky honours the 50th anniversary of the book.
