Heading towards Tate Britain to see the Folk Art exhibition the other day, by a devious route, I remembered a recent news item about the removal of the chimneys from Battersea Power Station and realized it might be my last opportunity to capture it in its current ruined but externally complete state. The latest stage in the 30+ year saga of what to do with it has entered a new phase and the chimneys are to be removed and rebuilt, a process taking some time. The scaffolding is there and work had started.
There is hardly any working industry left on the banks of the Thames in central London. This is one survivor, adjacent to the power station.
When I arrived at the Tate I was overwhelmed by the installation in the Duveen Galleries by Phyllida Barlow which I had somehow not yet seen. This was a new kind of ruin, a new kind of industry, a reflection of the state of Britain.
